Human rights activists and members of the public are now demanding an explanation on how the incident occurred.
According
to Bomet deputy OCPD Michael Mbaluku, the incident occurred on Thursday
evening when the suspects in custody were allowed to freely interact
during super.
As food was being served, a lot of
commotion followed and the suspect took advantage of the situation and
sneaked to the women’s cells where he defiled the 12 year old girl.
Women
prisoners returned from having their super to find the girl writhing in
pain and bleeding profusely. They alerted officers who rushed the girl
to Bomet Hospital where she was treated.
Mbaluku said that the girl was in custody waiting for the hearing of her assault case.
The
case has triggered a lot of interest from leaders and activists who now
question the safety of inmates and also accuse the officers of
negligence. The officers on duty were presented before a penal committee
and handed a Sh. 10,000 fine.
