Hope of reduction of the hardships being experienced by motorists and travellers along the Lokoja-Abuja highway brightened on Thursday.
An engineer with the Gitto Construction Company (one of the construction giants) Mr. Ajani Adeyemo told journalists in Lokoja on Thursday that the road which was diverted as a result of the flood would be completed on Thursday night.
Ajani Adeyemo said they were working assiduously to complete the job, adding that by Friday (today) the road would be ready for motorists and other road users to use.
A heavy rainfall on Thursday stalled the construction of an alternative route to the flooded Abuja-Lokoja Road.
Gitto Construction Company, which is handling the project, had sand-filled a part of the flood road and also channelled a bye-pass by cutting a swathe through the bush.
Construction work had progressed to an appreciable level on Wednesday and motorists were hopeful that the bye-pass would be completed on Thursday.
An overnight downpour however slowed the progress of construction work and shifted the completion time by another 24 hours.
The Federal Government had on Wednesday directed the opening of the bye-pass in the belief that the road would be completed by Thursday.
Minister of Works, Mr. Mike Onolemenen, stated this after the Federal Executive Council meeting presided over by Vice-President Namadi Sambo.
He said, “What we’ve been doing since yesterday (Tuesday) morning is that around the flooded area, we identified a bye-pass which we have created.”
Stranded motorists expressed disappointment with the delay, and urged the company to consider their sufferings and work around the challenges it was facing
