Tragedy struck yesterday in Akure, Ondo State capital when a 10-year-old
pupil of All Saints Anglican Primary School, Oke-Ijebu, Akure,
allegedly shot his classmate with one of the two single barrel guns
found behind the toilet of the school.
Daily Sun gathered that
unknown people, suspected to be robbers, left the two guns at the back
of the toilet of All Saints Anglican Primary School, Oke-Ijebu. It was
learnt that the two pupils, who were playing during lunch break, thought
the guns were toys.
A source told Daily Sun that one of the
pupils while fiddling with the gun pulled the trigger and killed his
colleague in the process. He also suffered gunshot injuries.
The
incident threw some parts of Akure into pandemonium as many parents
trooped to the school, expressing their worries about the safety of
pupils in the school.
Some of the parents, it was gathered, hurriedly took their wards home.
The
names of the two students involved in the incident were not confirmed
as at the time of filing this report as the school authorities declined
to speak with journalists.
Thereafter, the school closed
abruptly and the remains of the dead pupil were deposited at a mortuary
while the injured one is receiving treatment at the state specialist
hospital. When contacted, the image-maker of the Ondo State Police
Command Aremu Adeniran, who confirmed the incident, said the command
suspected that the two barrel guns cut to size, were hid there by armed
robbers.
Adeniran said when the men of the command from the A
Division combed the school, a sledge hammer; cutlass and other
instruments were recovered. He said men of the command had commenced
investigation into the incident with a view to unravelling those who hid
the guns in the school.
